Issachar derives from Hebrew יִשָּׂשכָר (Yissachar), composed of two elements: the prefix י- (yod), often functioning as a pronominal marker, and שָׂשכָר (sachar), meaning "hire" or "reward." The name thus carries the literal sense of "he will bring reward" or "there is hire." The etymology reflects ancient Hebrew linguistic patterns where names encoded theological meanings or parental hopes for blessing. The name entered European languages through the Septuagint and Latin Vulgate, particularly in Christian biblical scholarship, where it maintained its Hebrew form with minor orthographic variations.

Issachar holds significant biblical prominence as the ninth son of Jacob and Leah in the Hebrew scriptures. In Genesis, the name's origin is explained through Leah's gratitude when she bore this child, saying God had given her a reward for offering her handmaid to her husband. Issachar became one of the twelve tribes of Israel, associated with the fertile land allocated to his tribe in Canaan. Historically, the tribe of Issachar occupied territory in the Jezreel Valley, renowned for agricultural prosperity. The tribe also appears in accounts of King David's reign, with notable warriors bearing tribal allegiance.
