Hazael derives from Hebrew חזאל (Ḥaza'el), composed of the root חזה (ḥaza), meaning "to see" or "to perceive," and the divine name אל (El), meaning "God." The literal meaning thus translates to "God sees" or "God has seen." The name follows the common Hebrew naming convention of theophoric names—those incorporating a divine element—which were prevalent in ancient Israel and Judah. The construction parallels other biblical names such as Uriah (God is my light) and Jedidiah (beloved of God), reflecting a tradition of naming that expressed religious devotion or invoked divine attributes. The name has been preserved through biblical texts and Jewish tradition for over two and a half millennia.

Hazael holds significant biblical and historical importance as the name of a Syrian king who ruled Damascus in the 9th century BCE. According to the Hebrew Bible, Hazael was initially a servant of Ben-Hadad II, king of Aram-Damascus. He rose to power after consulting the prophet Elisha and subsequently became a major adversary to the northern kingdom of Israel. Hazael expanded Syrian territory and military power, engaging in numerous conflicts with Israelite rulers. Archaeological inscriptions, including those from Assyrian records, corroborate his historical existence and prominence.
