Darion is a modern American coinage that emerged in the late twentieth century, created as a blend of the classical name Darius and contemporary naming patterns favoring the "-ion" suffix. The name has no etymological roots in ancient languages; rather, it represents a distinctly American naming practice of combining established names with productive suffixes to generate novel variants. Darius itself derives from Old Persian *Dārayavahuš*, meaning "he who possesses good" or "wealthy," a name borne by ancient Persian kings. However, Darion abandons this classical lineage in favor of sound-based innovation, employing the popular "-ion" ending that gained prominence in African American naming traditions during the 1970s and 1980s.

Darion is a modern creation with no historical or mythological bearer.
